What will children learn?
At Thundersley Primary School, our History Curriculum provides many opportunities for the children to develop interest and understanding of the past. Source materials are used to encourage questioning and interpretation. We engage, inspire and challenge children with an enquiry-based approach to finding out about the past that will prepare them for a future as more informed and enlightened citizens. We do this through a high-quality curriculum, which allows the children to explore aspects/themes in depth and to use the locality. The children are exposed to a balance of local, British and World history. A clear progression of concepts-chronology, knowledge/understanding, enquiry, interpretation and communication is woven into the curriculum. Children are encouraged to perceive themselves as historians.

How will children learn?
At Thundersley Primary School, we will achieve this by:
- Teaching History consistently each term.
- Additional opportunities to engage with History activities throughout
the school year such as local visits, coach trip visits, visitors in school and school traditions such
as May Day.
- Linking History to other subject areas- particularly Geography and R.E to ensure relevance and context.
- Teaching skills-based lessons, these cover: identifying characteristic features (the clues) of a period of history; how to be open to other evidence, avoiding generalisations.
- Developing on skills from previous years. Key concepts will be revisited to challenge and develop their skills further.
- Ensuring that every child develops their skills through suitable planning, effective differentiation and support in order to meet the needs of each child.
- Encouraging a love and appreciation for history.
- Appreciating the contribution of people from the past by studying the impact they now have on life today.
- Using a discussion based approach, so that all children have opportunities to develop their understanding of history.
- Evaluating their own descriptions and deductions as well as peer feedback.
- Celebrating achievements in history through displays and exhibitions.
